The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
