From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the censorship process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise significant concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure

But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.

The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
