Meteorological Balloons Employed to Contraband Cigarettes Forced Closure of Vilnius Airport
Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
